Honeywell RTH9580WF Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat VS Nest Learning Thermostat

Honeywell and Nest are without a doubt the most popular manufacturers of smart thermostats. The two companies have been known to manufacture smart thermostats that are both energy efficient and convenient to use.

Among the best-selling smart thermostats from each brand is the Honeywell RTH9580WF Wi-Fi smart thermostat and Nest Learning thermostat. These thermostats have a lot in common and some key differences that appeal to some homeowners.

To get you acquainted with these specific differences and similarities, here is a comparison between the two smart thermostats.

Installation

Nest Learning Thermostat thrives in this category since it incorporates more DIY technology. With the Nest Learning thermostat, you can follow the manual and be done with the process in 30 minutes.

This is because installing the Nest Learning Thermostat doesn’t necessarily require a C-Wire. A C-Wire is what enables your smart thermostat to have access to your smart Wi-Fi.

Although it’s highly recommended that a smart thermostat be connected to it, some old homes do not have one. This makes the installation for most thermostats a bit trickier. However, this is not a problem for the Nest Learning Thermostat as it is built to thrive without a C-Wire.

The installation process for the Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostat, on the other hand, is a bit more involving. The Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostat requires a C-Wire, and without it, it won’t function. This means that if your home doesn’t have one, you have to get a professional installer to install it.

Smart Thermostat Programming

As the name suggests, the Nest Learning Thermostat can learn your routine and program itself. Based on the temperatures you frequently input, it can pick up on this and do it for you. Also, the Nest Learning Thermostat is fitted with sensors.

These sensors enable it to detect any movement or lack of it in the house. If it picks up any movement, the thermostat turns itself on, and when it doesn’t, it turns off. For this reason, it’s important to install your Nest Learning Thermostat in the frequently used room for better functionality.

The Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostat, on the other hand, bears a more traditional protocol. The smart thermostat is incapable of learning your routine. Rather you can either input your settings remotely or on the smart thermostat yourself.

The Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostat also involves setting the specific on and off time, unlike the Nest Learning Thermostat.

Smart Thermostat Design

One of the things that appeal to homeowners the most about the Nest Learning Thermostat is its design. The smart thermostat comes in a stylish black circular design. To top it off, whenever the Nest Learning thermostat detects any motion in the room, it illuminates.

The Honeywell Wi-Fi smart thermostat, on the other hand, comes in a bigger rectangular-shaped box. Although the external look might not be so appealing, the smart thermostat is fitted with something better.

The Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostat is fitted with a changeable display of colors. This is solely made to ensure that the smart thermostat blends in well with your home décor.

Smart Thermostat Compatibility

Like many smart thermostats, the compatibility of both the Nest and Honeywell smart thermostats shouldn’t be a concern.

This is because both smart thermostats are compatible with over 95% of the HVAC systems in use today. The two smart thermostats are not compatible with the 110V or 220V HVAC systems like most thermostats.

Setting Up the Home Wi-Fi Connection

A home Wi-Fi connection is very important when setting up any smart thermostat in your home. This is because it’s the Wi-Fi connection that will allow you to control the smart thermostat remotely.

With a Wi-Fi connection, you can access the mobile app for your thermostat and override settings or adjust the temperature.

For the Nest thermostat, you only need to connect it to your Wi-Fi once installed. The setup process involves inputting the Wi-Fi password. Afterwards, you can download the mobile app from either Appstore or Playstore. Once this is done, you’ll be able to control the thermostat remotely.

For the Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostat, once you’ve connected it to your Wi-Fi, you have to register it. The registration has to be done at mytotalconnectcomfort.com, and afterward, you receive an Email for activating the thermostat.

After downloading the app for remote control, you’ll need to add the device’s MAC ID and Device Code.

Conclusion

Based on your budget, these two thermostats offer almost the same functions. However, if you’re looking for more comfort and convenience, the Nest Learning thermostat is a great choice.

If you’re looking to get a thermostat strictly for temperature adjustment, the Honeywell thermostat will serve you well.
