
Smart home installation is the process of putting in and connecting devices like lighting, heating, locks, cameras and speakers so they work together on one network and can be controlled from a phone or by voice. A basic setup takes an afternoon. A whole house done properly takes planning, and the order you do it in matters more than most people expect.
I’ve been installing and specifying these systems for years, and the single biggest reason installs go wrong is that people buy the devices first and think about the network last. This guide goes in the order a professional would actually work.
Start With the Network, Not the Devices
Almost every “my smart home is unreliable” complaint traces back to Wi-Fi. A house with thirty connected devices puts a very different load on a router than a house with two laptops and a TV.
What to check before you buy a single device:
- Coverage in the awkward places. Not the living room. The garage, the attic, the far bedroom, the front door where a video doorbell will sit. Walk the house with your phone and check signal where devices will actually live.
- Your router’s device limit. Many ISP-supplied routers start struggling past 30 or so connections. If you are planning a full house, a mesh system like Eero, TP-Link Deco or UniFi will serve you better than the router your internet provider supplied.
- The 2.4GHz band. A lot of smart home kit only works on 2.4GHz, not 5GHz. If your router combines both under one name, some devices will fail to pair. You may need to split the bands temporarily during setup.
Budget for the network before you budget for the toys. It is the least exciting part of the job and the part that determines whether any of it works in two years.
Pick an Ecosystem, and Understand What Matter Changed
Your ecosystem is the app and voice assistant you will live in day to day. The four realistic choices are Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, and Home Assistant.
- Google Home is now built on Gemini, which makes it far more conversational than it was. Strong on general knowledge and search.
- Amazon Alexa has the widest device compatibility and the largest range of cheap speakers.
- Apple Home is the most privacy-focused and the tidiest if the household is already on iPhones. Smaller device range.
- Home Assistant is the enthusiast and professional choice. Runs locally, works with almost everything, keeps working when the internet drops. Steeper learning curve, and it is the one platform where you genuinely own your setup.
Matter is the interoperability standard that now lets a device work across several of these at once. It matters because it removes the old trap where buying into one ecosystem locked you out of half the market. Thread is the low-power mesh network many Matter devices use, and it needs a border router, which is built into most current Nest speakers, HomePods and Echo devices.
Practical advice: buy Matter-certified where you can. It is not a magic fix and support still varies by device, but it protects you against being stranded if you change your mind about ecosystems later.
Do You Need a Hub?
Less often than you used to. If everything you are buying is Wi-Fi or Matter over Wi-Fi, a smart speaker or display is usually enough.
You do need a proper hub if you are using Zigbee or Z-Wave devices, if you want automations that keep running when the broadband is down, or if you are going past roughly 20 devices and want them organised properly. Home Assistant Green, Homey Pro, Hubitat and SmartThings all do this job well.
The Installation Order That Actually Works
Install in this sequence. Each stage depends on the one before it.
- Network. Router or mesh in place, coverage confirmed everywhere devices will go.
- Hub or speaker. Whatever is acting as your controller and Thread border router.
- Lighting. The most-used category and the easiest to get an early win with. Start with one room.
- Heating. Thermostats and radiator valves. Highest energy payback of anything on this list.
- Security. Doorbell, cameras, locks, sensors. Do these once the network is proven, because they are the least forgiving of a weak signal.
- Everything else. Blinds, speakers, plugs, sensors, robot vacuums.
- Automations, last. Live with the devices for a fortnight before you automate anything. You will automate the wrong things if you guess.
Install one device at a time and confirm it works before moving to the next. When five devices go in at once and something fails, you have no idea which one caused it.
What Smart Home Installation Costs
Rough guide for a typical three-bedroom house, hardware only. Prices are in US dollars and vary quite a bit by market, so treat these as proportions rather than quotes:
- Starter, one or two rooms: $200 to $500. A speaker, a few bulbs, a couple of plugs, one camera.
- Mid-range, whole house basics: $1,500 to $3,000. Mesh Wi-Fi, smart heating, lighting through most rooms, video doorbell, a few cameras, a smart lock.
- Full system: $5,000 upwards. Wired lighting control, multi-room audio, blinds, full security, proper hub infrastructure.
If you are hiring someone, professional installation typically runs at a day rate somewhere between $500 and $800 depending on the market, and most whole-house jobs take two to four days. Where a professional earns that money is the design work and the network, not the physical fitting.
Watch for ongoing subscription costs too. Camera cloud recording, in particular, adds up quietly across several devices.
Five Mistakes I See Constantly
- Buying devices before checking the network. The single most common and most expensive mistake.
- Mixing ecosystems without a plan. Ending up with three apps for one house because each device was bought on offer.
- Over-automating early. Lights that turn off while someone is sitting still in the room is how a household turns against a smart home in a week.
- Ignoring the rest of the household. If it only works from your phone and nobody else can operate the lights, the install has failed regardless of how clever it is.
- No manual override. Every smart device should still work the ordinary way. Smart switches should still function as switches when the hub is down.
DIY or Hire Someone?
Do it yourself for plug-in devices, bulbs, battery cameras, smart speakers, and most video doorbells running on batteries.
Get a qualified electrician for anything involving mains wiring. That means in-wall switches and dimmers, hardwired doorbells, wired lighting control, and thermostats connected to a boiler or heat pump. In most countries this is legally restricted work rather than a matter of preference, so check the rules where you are before touching it.
Consider a consultant rather than an installer if the house is large, the requirements are complicated, or you want a system designed once and properly rather than accumulated device by device.
Common Questions
How long does smart home installation take? A single device takes 10 to 30 minutes. A starter setup takes an afternoon. A whole house, done properly with the network sorted first, takes two to four days.
Do I need to rewire? Usually no. Most modern smart home systems are wireless. Rewiring only comes into it for wired lighting control systems like Lutron or Control4, and those are generally new-build or full-renovation decisions.
Will it still work if the internet goes down? Partly. Voice assistants and remote access stop. Devices on local protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread usually keep working, and Home Assistant keeps running automations locally. Cloud-dependent Wi-Fi devices generally stop.
Can I take it with me when I move? Plug-in and battery devices yes. Anything wired in is normally treated as a fixture and stays. Factory-reset everything and remove it from your account before you hand over the keys, or the new owners inherit your cameras.
Where to Start
Pick one room and one problem. The hall that is always dark, the heating that runs when the house is empty, the front door you cannot see from the kitchen. Solve that one thing properly, live with it for a couple of weeks, then expand.
The houses that end up with genuinely good smart home systems are almost never the ones that bought everything at once.
