If you’re searching for home automation training courses or smart home installer training, you’ll quickly find that the options don’t make it easy to compare. Some routes require you to travel and take time off work. Some are tied to specific product brands. Some are genuinely useful for building a business, and some are more about the certificate than the knowledge.
This guide compares the four main routes available in 2026, what each one costs, whether you can do it online, and who each is actually right for.
I’ve been working in and around this industry for a long time. I built the NGSHI Professional Program, so I’m not a neutral party — I’ll be upfront about that from the start. But I’ve also done the research on the other options, and I think it’s more useful to give you an honest picture of the whole landscape than to pretend there’s only one choice worth considering.
Here’s how the main training routes break down.
The Main Options
CEDIA
CEDIA is the trade body for the custom installation industry globally, and their certification programme is the most widely recognised credential in the professional smart home space. Their certifications go from entry-level CIT (Cabling and Infrastructure Technician) through to IST (Integrated Systems Technician) and ESC-D (Electronic Systems Designer).
The certifications are ANSI-accredited, which means they carry genuine weight — particularly if you’re going after commercial projects, working with property developers, or want your credentials to be recognised internationally. In a competitive tender situation, CEDIA certification is something clients and specifiers actually look for.
The trade-offs are real, though. In-person training costs around £1,500–£1,800 per course for non-members. The courses are held at scheduled locations — primarily in the US and UK — which means travel costs and time away from work if you’re not close to a training centre. The IST exam alone costs $200 / £170 for members. And the certifications expire every three years, requiring ongoing professional development to renew.
CEDIA also does have online learning options through their portal, which are self-paced and cover a wide range of topics. If you’re seriously pursuing the full certification pathway, these are worth looking at alongside the in-person courses.
AWE Smart Home Academy
AWE is a UK-based distributor of consumer electronics and smart home technology, and their Smart Home Academy runs training courses for installers — from foundation-level introductions through to more advanced product-specific training in areas like home cinema, lighting, and whole-house control.
The strength here is the practical, product-focused approach. AWE courses are delivered by people who know the kit well, and the training tends to be hands-on rather than theoretical. If you’re a UK-based installer who buys through AWE’s distribution network, this is also a natural extension of that relationship — they run smaller group sessions which allows for real interaction and questions.
The limitation is scope. AWE’s training is primarily product and technology focused — it will make you better at installing specific systems, but it doesn’t cover business development, client acquisition, pricing, or the broader range of ecosystem knowledge you need to serve most residential clients. It’s also mostly UK-focused, with limited options for installers in Ireland or Europe.
Manufacturer Training
Almost every major smart home brand offers some form of installer training. Lutron runs the Lighting Control Institute with free and paid courses on their lighting systems. Control4 requires dealers to go through their certification programme before they can access and sell the platform. Philips Hue, Aqara, Shelly, and most other brands offer online resources, webinars, and technical documentation aimed at installers.
The big advantages: most of it is free or very low cost, it’s immediately practical, and it’s specific to the exact products you’ll be working with. If you’re going to install a lot of Lutron systems, Lutron’s own training is the best place to learn Lutron. Same goes for any other platform.
The catch is obvious — it’s brand-specific by definition. You end up with deep knowledge of one ecosystem and gaps everywhere else. Clients don’t arrive saying “I want a Lutron house.” They arrive saying “I want my home to work well.” Serving that client properly means knowing the full range of options, not just the ones you’ve been trained on by the manufacturer who wants you selling their products.
Manufacturer training is also not a credential. Completing a Philips Hue installer course doesn’t give you anything you can show a client to differentiate yourself from someone who just read the manual.
NGSHI Professional Program
The NGSHI (Next Generation Smart Home Installer) Professional Program is the course I built, so take what follows in that context. I’ll be as straight as I can about what it does and doesn’t do.
The course is designed specifically for the independent installer or small firm — not for someone working within a large integrator business where CEDIA certification makes more sense. It’s fully self-paced and online, with lifetime access, so you can work through it around existing commitments rather than taking days off for training events. The price is $497.
Coverage is deliberately broad — networking, ecosystems, lighting, security, climate, cameras, hubs, AV, smart locks, window dressings, safety sensors — because most residential clients want someone who can advise across all of these, not a specialist in one category. The course also includes a substantial business module (Business in a Box) that covers pricing, client acquisition, proposal templates, SOPs, recurring revenue streams, and the tools to set up a consulting practice from scratch. That business content is the part that genuinely separates it from purely technical training.
What it doesn’t give you: ANSI accreditation, hands-on lab time, or the industry networking that comes with CEDIA membership. If you’re targeting commercial projects or enterprise-level residential work where clients are specifically asking for CEDIA credentials, the NGSHI certification won’t substitute for that.
What it does give you: a solid technical foundation across the full range of smart home systems, the ecosystem knowledge to advise clients properly, and the business tools to charge consulting rates rather than day rates. Over 1,500 people have completed it.

What to Think About Before Deciding
The question isn’t which training option is “best” in the abstract — it’s which one is right for where you’re going.
If you’re starting out and want to build an independent smart home consulting practice, you need broad ecosystem knowledge and business structure. That points you toward NGSHI as a foundation, with manufacturer training on top for the specific platforms you end up working with most.
If you’re already working in a custom install or AV firm and want to advance your career within that world — particularly if you’re UK or US-based and close to training centres — CEDIA certification is worth the investment. The credential carries real weight with the kinds of clients and projects those firms target.
If you’re an electrician or IT professional looking to add smart home as a service line, you probably don’t need CEDIA yet. You need enough knowledge to advise clients properly and enough business tools to price and position your services correctly. Start there, and consider CEDIA later as the business justifies it.
And regardless of which route you take, layer manufacturer training on top — Lutron’s LCI, the Aqara technical guides, the Home Assistant documentation. That product-level knowledge is what makes the difference on site.
Online Home Automation Courses vs In-Person Classes
Most people searching for home automation courses online are really asking one question: can I learn this properly without taking days off work and travelling to a training centre?
The honest answer is yes for the knowledge, and partly for the credential.
Online courses handle the theory, ecosystem knowledge, product comparison and the business side perfectly well. You can work through them in evenings and weekends, revisit a module when a client asks something you are unsure about, and keep the material as a reference library you actually go back to. Both NGSHI and CEDIA’s online portal work this way.
What online training cannot replace is hands-on time with the kit. Terminating cable properly, mounting a doorbell on an awkward wall, commissioning a lighting system in a real house, those come from doing the work rather than watching someone else do it. In-person options like AWE’s small group sessions and CEDIA’s practical courses exist precisely for that reason.
If you have searched for home automation classes near me and found nothing local, you are not missing out on as much as you might think. Take the theory online, then build the practical skills on your own installs. Start with your own home, then friends and family, before you charge anyone for the work.
Do You Actually Need Home Automation Certification?
It depends entirely on who your clients are going to be.
For most residential clients, certification is reassurance rather than a requirement. They want to know you are competent and will not leave them with a system nobody can support in two years. A recognised certificate helps with that, but so does a clear proposal and a portfolio of work you can point at.
For commercial work, property developers, and high-end residential projects that go out to tender, accreditation matters a great deal more. That is where CEDIA’s ANSI-accredited certifications earn their cost, because the specifier is often required to check for them.
For anyone building an independent consulting practice, the certificate matters less than being able to price the work properly, write a proposal that wins, and explain trade-offs to a client who does not know Zigbee from Thread. That is a business skills gap rather than a technical one, and it is where most installers quietly lose money.
Stay Current Once You’re Trained
Smart home technology moves fast. Platforms that were standard two years ago have been discontinued or overhauled. Matter changed the interoperability picture significantly. AI assistants are being baked into devices in ways that affect how you advise clients on ecosystem choice.
