Last updated October 24, 2026. Apple HomeView ships on November 13, so everything about it here comes from Apple’s announcement and specification page, not from hands-on testing.

The Short Answer

Pick the display that matches the household’s ecosystem, because that decides more than any spec. For an Apple household HomeView is the one to quote, at $299 for either the tabletop or the wall-mounted version. For an Alexa household the Amazon Echo Hub is the stronger wall panel: it is listed as a Thread border router and a Zigbee coordinator, with a US price of $179.99. For Google Home, the Nest Hub Max is a Thread border router too, though it was listed as unavailable on Amazon US when we checked.

The big unknown is the hub role. Apple’s specification page lists Thread networking for HomeView but does not say whether it is a Thread border router, and it does not list Ethernet. Until Apple confirms that, keep your current hub in place on any Apple job.

Which One Is Best for a Wall-Mounted Install?

The Echo Hub is built for it. It is 15 mm thin and designed for the wall, so there is little to plan beyond power and Wi-Fi. HomeView comes in a wall-mounted version that ships without the mount, cable or power adapter. Apple announced USB-C ($59.95), AC wired ($79.95) and Power over Ethernet ($129.95) mounts, with the PoE version expected in early 2027. The Nest Hub Max is a 10-inch tabletop display with no wall mount option.

If you are opening a wall for a HomeView client, run Cat6 to the likely position even if they start on USB-C. Our HomeView wall mount and compatibility guide covers the power options in detail.

Which One Works as a Smart Home Hub?

On paper the Echo Hub does the most, since it combines Matter, a Thread border router and a Zigbee coordinator in one panel. The Nest Hub Max covers Matter and Thread but has no Zigbee. HomeView is the open question. Apple lists Thread but has not described a border router role, so on an Apple job keep the HomePod mini or Apple TV that already does that work. Our guide to Apple Home hubs explains which current devices qualify.

Is HomeView Worth $299 Compared With the Others?

Only inside Apple Home. HomeView costs about $120 more than the Echo Hub’s US listing and adds a 12MP Center Stage camera that the Echo Hub lacks, but it cannot run an Alexa or Google household. If the family uses iPhones and Apple Home already, the price is reasonable for a new display. If they have a mix of phones, price the Echo Hub or a Nest display and let Matter do the cross-platform work. The Apple Home vs SmartThings comparison explains what Matter changes about that choice.

What Should Installers Do Before Quoting?

  • Confirm which ecosystem the household actually uses before showing any option.
  • Ask whether they want a tabletop display or a wall panel, and whether a cable can reach the spot.
  • Check whether the job needs Zigbee devices. Of the three, only the Echo Hub lists a Zigbee coordinator.
  • Keep the existing hub on Apple jobs until Apple confirms what HomeView does as a border router.
  • Check country availability. HomeView was reported as excluded from the EU at launch.
